Summer’s around the corner, keep your kids entertained with events

With summer just around the corner, July marks the beginning of endless school-free days spent with the kids at home (and under your feet). But they needn’t be spent melted into the sofa, watching TV marathons or hauled up in dark bedrooms lit by the eerie LED glow of an iPad.

Summer is jam-packed with loads of kid-friendly adventures and with so much fun to be had by all, it seems a shame to be cooped up inside.

Whether you’re looking for entertainment for a children’s party so you can steal a few hours of peace and quiet or some ideas for exciting events and festivals, here’s our handy guide to keeping the little ones occupied in the coming months.

Fun Pop up events

Embrace the great outdoors this summer by taking your little ones to the many different pop-ups and events springing up all over the place now that the sun is out!

With London Wonderground opening its glittering gates next month, there’s loads of fun-for all-the-family to be had on the South Bank and lots events to pick from. Whether you go for ‘Shlomo’s Beatbox Adventure for Kids’ or ‘Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall’, there’s sure to be something for everyone.

‘Idol’ soft play centre

Why not try out the soft play space in Barking ‘The Idol’, which opened in March. Designed by Turner prize nominee Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, it encompasses all the wild creativity and unpredictability of her performances and draws from a diverse range of inspirations. Commissioned by Create, the sculpture and play centre is a chaotic swirl of towering climbing frames, labyrinthine chambers and cage like structures in a uniform palette of monochrome black and white. Promising to a unique, and fun experience for all, it’s just ‘you and your children VS a giant soft play cyborg.

Workshops and Circus Schools

Summer’s a great time to learn something new, so why not head down to one of Marawa the Amazing’s hoop workshops in London, and spin some hoops with her glamorous Majorettes. Suitable for all ages and levels, each class aims to give you a great workout, loads of laughs and some killer moves for the playground come September.

Bestival2008And if hooping’s not your thing, there’s a wealth of circus workshops and classes for your children to try out this summer. If they’ve always wanted to learn how to juggle, ride a unicycle or have a go at acrobatics, then they’re in for a treat. With years of experience teaching both children and adults, they’ll be in safe hands. Sam recently provided children’s circus workshops for the trendy Ace hotel in Shoreditch, is a fabulous choice and has an array of circus workshop and circus parties, which will not just keep your kids entertained, but will teach them a new skill and be great for their confidence.

Kids Festivals

Summer means festival season and that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun if you’ve got kids. There are plenty of great festivals that have a wonderful family orientated vibe with acts and artists that appeal to festival-goers of all ages.

Glastonbury festival has a whole ‘Kidz field’ devoted to children. Absolutely packed with circus entertainers, walkabout acts, play areas and interactive games, they’ll be spoilt for choice, and you’ll be fairly jealous!

Believe it or not, Latitude Festival gives your kids the chance to come home with a Council-backed art qualification in everything from assault courses, arts and crafts to DJing. Whilst Camp Bestival ‘kids are king’, with a veritable ‘avalanche of activities’ for ages six to 62.

Alternatively, if you’re not up for taking you’re little ones to a full blown festival; why not consider completely children focused events like ‘Just So’ in Cheshire. The perfect way to nourish your child’s imagination and unleash their creativity, expect a fantastic mix of story-telling, circus skills, drama and arts and crafts.
