Next in our 60 seconds with… series, we caught up with quick-witted director of the Event Services and Supplier Association (ESSA), Andrew Harrison, on the need to innovate, his beard, and Sean Bean.
Describe yourself in five words or less.
Northern, beardy, principled, amicable, trustworthy.
How long have you been in your role?
Seven months, but over four years at ESSA in other guises.
How did you get into the events industry?
Associations have quite a unique role in the industry they serve and I still feel a bit of fraud describing myself as being in ‘events’, but I guess I am…to answer your question, Chris Skeith heard I was looking for a new challenge and he was clearly suitably impressed when I met him.
What do you like and dislike about the events industry?
I think people on both counts. People make the difference regardless of the industry you’re in.
How has the industry changed since you first started?
I think change/progress is taking place at a faster pace again after several years of caution. Out of change often comes the need to innovate, so I think the next few years will produce a number of really exciting innovations, some accidental.
Best event you’ve been to?
My wedding was pretty special…Shangri-La at Glastonbury is also up there.
What have been your key achievements to date? (Doesn’t have to be work related)
Thinking about this, I’ve actually realised for the first time how closely related ‘relief’ and ‘achievement’ are as emotions.
Buying a house, sounds quite mundane…but any current first time buyer in the last seven years will know what I mean.
Lots of other personal stuff that would bore readers…work wise, staying employed over the last 10 years has been a huge plus.
Which team do you support?
Oldham Athletic…they play a brand of football that has allowed them to successfully anchor themselves in Division 1 for a record number of years after very briefly courting the big boys some 20 years ago. If this brand was on the high street it would be Greggs.
If there was a film about your life, who would you choose to play you and why?
Sean Bean…one does not simply play Andrew Harrison.
What do you do outside of work to let steam off?
Hopefully this blog doesn’t have many readers (joking)…gardening. I bloody love it, my grass is fed better than me.
First song that comes to mind?
Suede – Beautiful Ones
What are your goals for 2015?
Making everything better than is was last year. Serious answer.
